Mugmates

この曲の題名、“Mugmates” の mug は「マグ・カップ」(日本語英語であり、英語では単に mug で良い)  のことだけど、この「マグ・カップ」という言葉っていつ頃から使われはじめたのか、ちょっと気になってざっと調べたんだけどよく分からなかった。少なくとも 60 年代には、この言葉はまだ一般的ではなかったような気がする。当時の日本語の曲のタイトルは「コーヒー・デイト」で、日本語表記はまだ「デート」ではなく「デイト」なんだなあ。喫茶店で二人で一緒にコーヒー飲むのが新鮮でお洒落な感じがするところからつけただろう。一般家庭の固定電話普及率ってこの頃は 10 % に全然達していないので、デートしてないときはきっと文通していたんだと思う。
