I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen

エルヴィス・プレスリーは、1958 年に 2 年間の徴兵通知を受けて西ドイツの米国陸軍基地で勤務しているが、その間の 1959 年にこの曲を私家録音したものが残っている。ピアノはプレスリー自身によるものであろう。

前の記事にあえてプレスリーの後年の録音を付けたのは、曲の出だしの

I'll take you home again, Kathleen
Across the ocean wild and wide

という部分で、“wild and wide” のところの L の有り無しでの響きの差が結構参考になったのを思い出したためである。

そんなことは関係なく、1875 年にアイルランドではなく、米国で作られたこの美しい曲をジョン・フォード監督の『リオ・グランデの砦』(Rio Grande, 1950) で Sons of the Pioneers がジョン・ウェインとモーリン・オハラの前で唄うシーンは忘れ難いものだし、プレスリーの後年の歌唱も大好きである。プレスリーの歌詞を下につけておく。他の人の歌詞とは少し違いがあり、“Your voice is soft” のところは sad だし、“lovely eye” は eyes であり、“your heart shall feel no pain” の shall は will である。歌詞の最初の節の内容に照らすと will の方が適切ではないかと思う。
