The Lady Is a Tramp

Rodgers & Hart の名曲である。最近だと、Lady Gaga と Tony Bennett が歌っていた。キリがないので一部だけを紹介する。

歌詞にでてくるNoel Caward は、エルンスト・ルビッチの傑作『生活の設計』(Design for Living, 1933) の脚本を提供しているので(もっともほとんど跡形もなく変えられてしまったようだ)、あの映画のミリアム・ホプキンスとこの曲のイメージが結びついた。ここにあげていない残りの歌詞にもいろいろな人名が出て来ていて、たとえば、当時の NY 市長は、空港の名前になっている La Guardia だったんだとわかる。“dish the dirt” は「噂話をする」という意味。また当時は劇場には少し遅れて来るというのが上流階級の淑女の慣わしであったらしい。なんと言われたって、大きな流れに流されない自由な生き方をしようとする女性の歌である。
