ハワード・ホークス監督の『紳士は金髪がお好き』(Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, 1953) では、Marilyn Monroe によって “Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend” という非常に有名な曲が歌われる。

この曲のタイトルは、当然

Dogs are man's best friend.

からきていると思うが、こちらの方の man は「人間一般」を指すので無冠詞である。女性差別にもつながるので最近はこの意味ではあまり使用されない。

この曲の

という部分はいつも笑ってしまう。louse は虱の単数形で複数形は lice であるが、辞書には「ろくでもない奴等」の意味では louses を使うとある。しかし、辞書にあるその意味はこの曲から来ているんじゃないかと思う。ここでは、 spouses (配偶者) と韻を踏むために lice ではくて louses にしたんだと想像している。単なる想像なので違っているかもしれない。

この曲、モンローの歌があまりにも突出して有名なために他の歌手はすべて影が薄くなっているんだけれど、モンローが最初に歌った訳ではない。Ethel Merman と Jo Stafford が 1950 年に録音している。
