セプテンバー・ソング

写真は、ウィリアム・ディターレ監督『旅愁』(September Affair, 1950) のジョゼフ・コットンとジョーン・フォンテイン。ジョーン・フォンテインが 10 代から 30 代の女主人公を演じてみせた、マックス・オフュルス監督の『忘れじの面影』(Letter From an Unknown Woman, 1948) は、中田秀夫監督に言わせると古今東西ベストワンの映画だそうであるが、それはマックス・オフュルスの映画という理由にとどまらないのだろう。

 映画の中で流れる『セプテンバー・ソング』の作曲はもちろんクルト・ヴァイルでウィリアム・ディターレ監督とは知己であった。クルト・ヴァイルは 1950 年に心臓発作で亡くなっており、イタリアを舞台にしたこの同年の映画でイタリアの音楽とはかけはなれた『セプテンバー・ソング』が流されることには特別の意味があったとしか思えない。なお、この映画でかけられるレコードで歌っているのは、ジョン・ヒューストン監督の父親である俳優、ウォルター・ヒューストンである。

日本でもザ・ピーナッツ、伊藤ゆかり、フランク永井、他多数によって歌われているし、合衆国では、フランク・シナトラ、ビング・クロスビー、エラ・フィッツジェラルド、サラ・ヴォーン、他多数のカバーが存在する。
