Tommy Dorsey 1938

“Boogie Woogie” は 1938 年に最初にヒットしたのか。知らなかった。1944 - 45 年に大ヒットしたのが最初だと思っていた。しかも、Deane Kincaide が短い間だけど、ドーシー楽団に係わっていた頃に手がけたアレンジだったんだ。

Paul Weston も 1936 年から1940 年までドーシー楽団のアレンジを手がけたが、The Pied Pipers を 1938 年にドーシーに紹介したのは彼であり、Jo Stafford と正式に結婚したのは 1952 年のことである。

もう一人、ドーシー楽団の編曲家としては、シナトラの曲で有名な Axel Stordahl を忘れることはできない。“I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” は彼のアレンジによるものである。

フレッド・アステアと『踊るニュウ・ヨーク』(Broadway Melody of 1940, 1940) で共演したエレノア・パウエルが、彼と『ビギン・ザ・ビギン』にあわせて踊るシーン。

バングラデシュに行くには直行便がないので、シンガポールのチャンギ国際空港で次の便を待ちながら、Duke Ellington と Ray Brown が、24歳の誕生日も迎えないうちに亡くなってしまったベーシスト、ジミー・ブラントンに捧げた 1971 年のアルバム “This One’s for Blanton” を聞いていた。

ディック・ミネが27歳ぐらい (1935) のときの録音である。

Ivie Anderson が歌ったデューク・エリントンのこの代表曲は、1932 年にレコードが出たが、この年に昨日の記事の Bubber Miley は亡くなったのである。デュークがこの曲を作曲したのは1931 年だが Miley の病気はすでに悪化していた。どんな思いでデュークがこの曲を作ったかは、この曲を聴けば明らかだろう。

最初聞いたときは、本当に不思議な音だと思った。Bix Beiderbecke は 28 歳で、この人は 29 歳で亡くなった。

Dick Haymes and Helen Forrest

40 年代にはシナトラと同じぐらい、もしかするとそれ以上に人気のあった Dick Haymes だけれど、ロバート・ロッセン監督の『オール・ザ・キングスメン』( All the King’s Men, 1949) や、ジョン・フォード監督の『幌馬車』(The Wagon Master, 1950) などに出演していたのが忘れがたい女優、ジョーン・ドルーと結婚していたんだなあ。彼女がベン・ジョンソンと写っている写真貼り付けておこう。もちろんフォードの傑作『幌馬車』からのクリップである。この低予算で上映時間 86 分の静止画の構図の組み合わせではない、ひたすらに運動であろうとしている映画の中で、彼女も気絶したり、頰杖をついて別の片手を上着のポケットに突っ込んだり、ベン・ジョンソンに水をかけたり、靴を履き替えたりといった緩急織り交ぜた様々な動きを見せてくれている。

えーと、Dick Haymes は、Harry James や Tommy Dorsey の楽団にいたが、シナトラが独立したように彼も 1943 年ぐらいに独立してデッカと契約した。Helen Forrest も彼と同じ時期に独立しておりデュエットはこれ以降のことであろう。
